10 Things Loved in May

May started out with me coming home after working for a few weeks in Portland. It was great to be there and to see my favorite people and places, but it was even better to get back home. You don’t realize how much a place has become your home until you’re gone for a bit. Flying back into HNL on this trip really, really felt like coming home, which was a great feeling! Here are 10 more things I loved about May:

1. Stumptown Coffee – my final stop before leaving Portland. I bought so much, they said I could pretty much take anything else in the store that I wanted, including this cold brew.

2. Home (sigh). No, this isn’t the view from my home – I wish! But this is the beautiful windward side where we live.

3. Lazy weekends at the beach.

4. Our first trip to the Big Island. Look at this adorable horse I found on the way to South Point. I tried to convince him I was his paniolo.

5. Seared ahi at Merriman’s Market Cafe – yum! This was PERFECT. (I get very grumpy when I order seared ahi and it comes out cooked all the way through.)

6. Driving up Mauna Kea – 13796 feet!

7. Seeing the lava glow from Halemaumau at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

8. Snorkeling with a pod of spinner dolphins – they just showed up.

9. The Painted Church at Honaunau – amazing.

10. Spending five days in Volcano and hiking almost every day! It was chilly up there in the mountains, which reminded us of Oregon. <3

Life’s a beach in Kailua

Har har har… No matter how stressed I get, it sure helps to have this close by:

Some people assume that everyone who lives in Hawaii is out on the beach all day. Well, we’re not. But we do go for evening walks and spend our weekends here! Can’t complain.

10 Things Loved in April

Wow that went quick! April marked my first trip back to Portland for work. And boy did I work – almost around-the-clock for three straight weeks, including weekends. I did have time for meals out with friends, coffee with my parents and an afternoon of shopping though. Phew. I was so happy to get home. Here are 10 things that brought me joy in April:

  1. Tasty breakfast spots on Oahu – especially ones that serve Portland coffee like Town and Morning Glass.
  2. Hiking to Maunawili Falls.
  3. Having a “fruit corner” instead of a fruit bowl.
  4. Cooking with beets – my favorite veggie.
  5. Kayaking to the Mokes.
  6. Shopping ’til I dropped at the Columbia and Adidas employee stores. What? I needed more outdoorsy gear – it’s for my health!
  7. Dreaming at Rejuvenation Hardware – love this place.
  8. Running along the waterfront. I have missed you, Portland.
  9. Seeing my lovely parents, even for just a short while.
  10. Making up for lost time at my favorite Portland breakfast spots.

10 Things Loved in March

Our first visitors came to stay! And boy did they stay … for the entire month! What fun it was though. Here are 10 things that made me happy in March:

  1. Hanging out with two of our favorite people and showing off our new town.
  2. Lunches at Prima in Kailua.
  3. Playing tourist.
  4. Pie at Camille’s on Wheels
  5. Kayaking Kaneohe Bay
  6. The Monkey Bowl and Ginger Ono smoothie at Lanikai Juice
  7. Sunset at Shark’s Cove
  8. Strolling on the beach (so what if it makes me happy every month!)
  9. Checking out the Byodo-in Temple – it’s been quite a few years since I last visited here!
  10. Stumbling upon beautiful creations on the beach.

10 Things Loved in February

Home at last! I am officially a Hawaii resident – and I even have a driver’s license to prove it. On February 1, Mr. Kitty and I landed in Hawaii. What a journey this has been. The “house” arrived a couple of weeks later. We are settling in. Here are 10 things that made my month:

  1. My patient and very quiet travel companion on the flight over. (He was not happy, but at least he kept it to himself.)
  2. Flying over the windward side of Oahu – a rare treat. I could see my house from the plane!
  3. Being reunited with my love. <3
  4. Beautiful flowers.
  5. Weekend adventures and discovering new beaches.
  6. Sweet Home Waimanalo – my favorite restaurant.
  7. Sunrises at Kailua Beach – mmmm, the Mokuluas
  8. Sunsets at Kailua Beach – that burst of color as the sun disappears over the Kooluas. Until tomorrow.
  9. Opal Thai – amazing Thai food on the north shore.
  10. The arrival of our household goods. It is truly who and what you surround yourself with that makes a place feel like home.

A great month.
